Hello, fellow martial arts enthusiasts! We’re thrilled to have you here at The Grappling Lab, your go-to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in the heart of Prestons, City of Liverpool. Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s close to our hearts: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The Roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

First, let’s take a step back and understand the roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Originating from the traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, BJJ was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil in the early 20th century. The Gracie family, particularly Carlos and Helio Gracie, adapted the techniques to focus more on ground fighting and leverage, allowing a smaller person to defend against a larger opponent. This is the essence of BJJ, and it’s what we teach here at The Grappling Lab.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs Gracie Jiu-Jitsu: What’s the Difference?

Now, you might be wondering, “What’s the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?” Well, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a subset of BJJ. It’s a style developed by the Gracie family that emphasises self-defence, survival, and getting the fight to the ground where techniques and leverage can be used to neutralise a larger, stronger opponent.

The Grappling Lab’s Approach to BJJ

At The Grappling Lab, we’re proud to say that our BJJ is indeed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Our Head Instructor, Nate Ellery, trained at Gracie Smeaton Grange and was promoted to the rank of black belt in 2020 at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy located in Smeaton Grange. Nate’s deep passion for the sport and his years of teaching, competing, and promoting BJJ have shaped our academy’s approach to BJJ.

The Benefits of BJJ

But the benefits of BJJ extend beyond the mats. Training in this martial art can provide physical benefits like weight loss, increased fitness, strength, and improved mobility. It’s also a fantastic way to cope with the stresses of everyday life, helping participants build resilience and comfortability in stressful situations.
