TGL Prestons adults no-gi BJJ classes

As we welcome the New Year, many of us are looking for fresh challenges to embark on. If you’re one of those people who’ve decided to get fit and try something new, we at The Grappling Lab, located in the heart of Prestons, City of Liverpool, have just the thing for you – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

BJJ is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It’s a fantastic way to get fit, learn self-defence, and challenge yourself mentally and physically. But we understand that the first few months as a white belt can be daunting. So, we’ve put together a guide to help you survive and thrive during this initial period.

Embrace the Challenge

Firstly, remember why you started. You wanted a new challenge, right? Well, BJJ is all about overcoming obstacles. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first, but don’t let this deter you. Embrace the challenge, and remember, every black belt was once a white belt.

Consistency is Key

The key to progress in BJJ, like any other skill, is consistency. Try to attend classes regularly. We recommend at least two to three times a week. This will help you get fit, improve your technique, and become familiar with the BJJ lifestyle.

Focus on Defence

As a white belt, your primary focus should be on defence. This means learning how to escape from bad positions and how to prevent your opponent from submitting you. This will not only keep you safe but also build a strong foundation for your future BJJ journey.

Ask Questions

Never be afraid to ask questions. We’re here to help you learn and grow. If something doesn’t make sense or if you’re struggling with a technique, ask for help. We’re a community here in Prestons, and everyone is eager to help each other improve.

Take Care of Your Body

BJJ is a physically demanding sport. Make sure you’re eating well, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest. Listen to your body. If you’re feeling sore or tired, take a break. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Enjoy the Journey

Lastly, enjoy the journey. BJJ is not just about getting fit or learning to defend yourself. It’s about personal growth, building friendships, and becoming part of a community. So, take a moment to appreciate the journey you’re on.

We’re excited to have you join us at The Grappling Lab. We’re not just a BJJ academy; we’re a community of individuals who are passionate about the sport and committed to helping each other grow.
