What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Effective Self Defence

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has proven itself time and time again to be one of the most effective hand to hand combat systems ever developed. It has been showcased by the Gracie family in mixed martial arts competitions such as the UFC. Time after time they have been able to defeat much larger opponents by using the techniques of BJJ.

The effectiveness of BJJ has led to it being used by defence and police forces across the globe as a key component of their hand-to-hand combat curriculums.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works on the principles of leverage and control. It allows a smaller opponent is able to defend themselves against a larger opponent. if necessary, control, restrain and submit their opponent.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is divided into two main categories; Gi Jiu-Jitsu and No Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

At The Grappling Lab Prestons we provide classes for both styles.

Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Gi BJJ is undertaken while wearing the traditional BJJ kimono. A BJJ Gi is like a Judo Gi. The Gi can be used by both combatants to control, throw and submit each other. This style of BJJ is very technical. Utilising the Gi provides a huge variety of possible takedowns, sweeps and submissions.

No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

No Gi BJJ is undertaken with both combatants wearing shorts and a rashie or T shirt. This style is like submission wrestling. No Gi BJJ is fast paced and is becoming very popular with practitioners and spectators alike.
