TGL Prestons kids BJJ classes (7)

As experienced BJJ coaches here at The Grappling Lab in Prestons, NSW, we know that teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to kids requires a special approach. While the core principles remain the same, the techniques and teaching methods need to be adapted to suit the physical and mental development of young learners. In this post, we’ll share our insights on how to effectively teach BJJ for kids, drawing from our experience working with children in the City of Liverpool area.

Understanding the Unique Needs of Young BJJ Learners

When teaching BJJ for kids, it’s crucial to recognise that they have different needs and abilities compared to adult learners. Children have shorter attention spans, less developed motor skills, and are still growing both physically and mentally. As coaches, we must take these factors into account and adjust our teaching style accordingly.

Some key considerations when working with young BJJ students include:

  1. Keeping classes fun and engaging with games and activities
  2. Breaking down techniques into smaller, more manageable steps
  3. Focusing on fundamental movements and positions rather than complex submissions
  4. Emphasising safety and control at all times
  5. Providing plenty of positive reinforcement and encouragement

Adapting BJJ Techniques for Kids

When it comes to the actual techniques taught in BJJ for kids classes, we’ve found that it’s best to start with the basics. This means focusing on fundamental movements like shrimping, bridging, and rolling, as well as core positions such as mount, guard, and side control.

As students progress, we gradually introduce more advanced techniques, but always with an emphasis on safety and control. For example, when teaching submissions, we stress the importance of applying them slowly and carefully, and always giving your partner time to tap out.

Some specific techniques that we’ve found work well for kids include:

  • Simple sweeps and reversals from guard
  • Basic guard passes like the knee slice and double under
  • Fundamental submissions like the kimura, armbar, and triangle choke
  • Takedowns that don’t involve lifting or slamming, such as the single leg and double leg

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Beyond just teaching techniques, we believe that creating a positive and supportive learning environment is essential for kids’ success in BJJ. This means fostering a culture of respect, teamwork, and perseverance both on and off the mats.

Some ways we do this at The Grappling Lab include:

  • Encouraging students to cheer each other on and celebrate each other’s successes
  • Regularly discussing the importance of values like discipline, humility, and hard work
  • Leading by example as coaches and always treating students with kindness and respect
  • Involving parents in their child’s training journey and keeping lines of communication open
